January 2009 Discussion Topic
January 13, 2009
Each month ASDC will be posting a topic for discussion for that month. January’s discussion topic is:
Current statistics show that 90% (or more) of Deaf or Hard of Hearing Children have hearing parents. In order to make the home environment language accessible, what are some things that you have found to be helpful?
We would love to hear your comments
Although my son Max is only seven months old and profoundly deaf, my husband and I have labeled almost everything in the house. I walk around the house with Max, we stare at the labels, I fingerspell, and sign then he plays with the light switch, lamp whatever. Although he doesn’t understand yet what the words are or say, he will become more familiar with language as he grows. This can only help his language development and it makes us as parents feel like we are doing something NOW for his development.
Wow! I am impressed with your proactive approach to your son’s deafness; and so quickly. How have you been able to be so invovled so soon after learning of Max’s loss of hearing? What was your initial response when you learned Max was profoundly deaf?
My son is 4, we found out he was hard of hearing a year ago. He’s already learned 300 + signs and starting to learn oral as well. I speak and sign to him all the time.
I really liked what Jasna does for her son. My son Matteo is also profoundly deaf. We found out when he was 2 years old. Hes 4 now (he’ll be 5 in June) and pre-school has helped him alot. We live in a small town so he doesnt get alot of help like he would at the school for the deaf. I have 4 other sons and we’re all learning signs. Books and videos have been helpful, but we’ve recently have been having a deaf role model come over and teach us alot more signs. Shes alot of help. No one in both sides of our family has any kind of hearing loss so this has been really diffucult for all of us.
All – keep up the great work!!!!!!!! Read, read, read to your children. Point to pictures, make happy faces, sign the words you know, jot down the the signs youdon’t kow and learn them for use later. Encourage a love for reading.
